Fly Fish The NAKNEK RIVERJune 8 - October 31
June can be great to excellent for Trophy
Rainbows at Lake Camp (the mouth of the Naknek River) and in the "Rapids" area
just up river from our river front cabins. The Rainbows winter in the enormous Naknek Lake
which holds the state's largest Rainbow on average. In 1991, a 23 lb. Rainbow was caught.
What makes this time period good for fishing is that the salmon smolt are migrating out of
the river and salmon smolt are an important source of feed. Smolt and Fry patterns work
well during this time period. The first part of July, especially during the warm sunny
days, dry fly fishing is excellent as insect life forms appear. Elk-Hair caddis and
Stone Flies are some of our favorites.
Around mid August these Rainbows move
into the salmon spawning areas. One prime location is the "Rapids" area - just
up river from the cabins. As the salmon spawn, these hungry Rainbows hang right behind
them to feed on the eggs. Glo-Bugs and Egg patterns work great during this time period. As
the year moves on into mid September to freeze-up, the best fishing for large Rainbows
(10-15 lb. range) starts and continues to get better. Leeches, Flesh Flies, Glo-Bugs,
Olive Wooly Bugger, and Sculpins are all favorites. Deep drifting from boats can be
exceptional for these late fall bows. We ask that you please practice a strict catch and
release policy with these magnificent fish.
